Melancholy Monday

The Bills is an all too heavy hitting reminder of those pesky notices we get in the mail each month. Casting in dark shadow behind what appears to be a car window, the viewer is subjected to a bleak and melancholy portrait drawing of a man. The stark contrast between the white of the drawing and the black of the car pushes the face right to the front of the space in which it captures, creating an post-impressionist illusion of flatness. The environment that he is in makes one question the action happening in the print, is he traveling to someone, or away from something, or just rolling down the window to take in the view?
